The Great Trail Treasure Hunt is back!
Lace up your shoes and tune up your bike because the 2019 Great Trail Treasure Hunt kicks off June 19 with more boxes to be found and more amazing prizes to be won!
Last year’s contest saw hundreds of Canadians from coast to coast to coast take to the 24,000-kilometre Great Trail network in pursuit of 100 hidden treasure boxes. This year, we’ve hidden 200 boxes, which means more to explore, and more chances to win. Read on to learn more!
What is the Great Trail Treasure Hunt?
The Great Trail Treasure Hunt is a geocaching-inspired contest aimed at getting Canadians outdoors and discovering all the amazing wildlife, scenery and history to be found along the Great Trail network. As the longest recreational trail in the world, The Great Trail offers a wide range of activities through a variety of landscapes — urban, rural and wilderness, along greenways, waterways and roadways.
It’s easy to take part in the Hunt; simply visit the contest website and explore the map to find a hidden cache near you. Enter the GPS coordinates into your phone, then grab your kids, your friends, your partner or your dog and hit the trail! Once you’ve found the box, write your name, the date and the time in the logbook and note down the redemption code on the underside of the lid.
Finally, before you jog, hike or bike away, be sure to snap a photo of yourself with the box; you’ll need this in order to be eligible to win a prize!
What can I win?
There are several different ways to win a prize in the Great Trail Treasure Hunt.
If you’re the first to find a box: Congratulations! You’ll find inside a special edition glow-in-the-dark Canada coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, a Great Trail iron-on patch and some other small items as a tribute to your treasure-hunting skill.
If you’re not the first, that’s okay! Everyone who finds a box can enter the redemption code and upload a photo of themselves with the box on the contest website to be entered into the weekly prize draws. Prizes available to be won include SPOT Satellite Messenger devices, KEEN boots, Nikon cameras, Parks Canada Discovery Passes, a one-month supply of CLIF Bars, Canadian Geographic publications and more. And of course, all entries are eligible to win the grand prize, an expedition cruise around Canada’s East Coast with One Ocean Expeditions.
Don’t stop hunting because this year we’ve introduced special rewards for our “super-users.” People who find five or more boxes will be entered into an exclusive draw for an amazing prize pack, including a guided hiking trip for two in Newfoundland with Quench!
Mark your calendar because a couple of our sponsors are offering additional prizing on certain weekends during the contest period! The weekend of July 5th and 6th is the Nikon Takeover Weekend; treasure hunters will have the opportunity to win a Nikon family package which includes a Nikon D3500 with 18-55 lens kit, plus a Nikon Coolpix W15.
The weekend of July 19th and 20th is the CLIF Bar Takeover Weekend. During this contest weekend, treasure hunters will have the opportunity to win one of three CLIF Adventure Packs; each includes a Patagonia backpack, a Marmot fleece, a toque, a brimmed cap, a water bottle, a travel mug, travel socks, a Buff, and a mix of CLIF Bars (2 caddies).
In addition, during this same weekend, CLIF Bar will also award one lucky treasure hunter a bicycle valued at up to $500 CAD. (Prize will be issued in a form of gift card to be applied toward a bike purchase of winner’s choice at a local MEC store).
